And Then There is Christina...

CHRISSY...
Always amazes me!

Christina has many nicknames. I call her Chris, Chrissy, Christy, Steen, Steeno, and many more that she probably would not want me to reveal in this blog. Each one is used in a different context and for different reasons but nevertheless, she answers to all of them.

Christina is my "artsy" child. She loves music, cooking, socializing, and of course lots of clothes and looking good! I imagined her to become a Top Chef but she appears to enjoy research and medicine. And appears to be very good at it.

She currently takes 18 credit hours and works two jobs while in school - Morehouse School of Medicine and a waitressing job in a Restaraunt on Peachtree. She makes all "A"s in calculus and A's and B's in the rest of her classes. Maybe she has that right brain, left brain thing going on...

Last week she called very excited. She had been selected to present the research project she is working on at the Morehouse School of Medicine Research Day Conference and wanted us to come. As life would have it, just before I booked a flight for her brother and myself to go we found out my brother-in-law, Robbie, had passed away. He also lived in Atlanta. So now the trip is two fold...one to support Christina and then to say goodbye to a great brother-in- law. I will save that for another blog.

Christy did an outstanding job with her poster presentation!

For those who couldn't make it, of course I video taped it. Check it out (8 minutes)

Somehow I Did The Impossible and It Helped Make Dreams Come True

Last summer I think I did the impossible.

I simply wanted Vincent to get some help with the SAT. After all, he was a rising Senior in high school and its tough getting a teenager to focus on anything more than 3 days ahead.

My sister told me about a summer program in Atlanta at Morehouse College where she would be teaching SAT prep to the participants. She runs a tutoring program in Atlanta that is fantastic called The Math Doctor and I respected her recommendation.
Anyway, to make a long story short, at the last minute Vinnie applied and got accepted into the summer program... but the kicker was it started a week before school was out in MD. Of course he protested when I told him he would have to start a summer "academic" program as soon as school was out! After a lengthy series of negotiations, we agreed he could have one day off and then we would hit the road for Atanta.
We literally had one week to get him packed and ready to go. Have you ever had to get a kid ready for college? Thats what we had to do in one week's time... dorm stuff, computer stuff, physical and shot stuff, oh my... it was almost impossible to do. Thank goodness for my sister, The Math Doctor, his sister - Christina, and lots of help from family and friends.

Once there, he loved it. Even though his new world bombarded him with college level English, Math and other courses he showed a spirit of tenacity and confidence in his work. He learned great study skills, time management, as well as learning the value of working as a team and great leadership ability.

When he finished that summer he had Morehouse as his number one choice for undergraduate schools and applied early admissions.

On Christmas eve he got the best gift ever...his admission acceptance letter to Morehouse.

Good For You, Vinnie... Enjoy Your Self!
